What is Zionism?

Zionism is the movement for Jewish self-determination and national restoration in the Jewish people’s ancestral homeland, the Land of Israel. 12

A serious history is more useful than a slogan. Start with the definition, follow the chronology, and inspect the sources yourself.

The modern movement gave political organisation to a much older connection.

Zionism did not begin as a modern political invention. For centuries before Herzl, Jews prayed toward Jerusalem, maintained communities in the land, remembered Zion in religious practice and expressed a hope of return.

Jewish kingdoms existed there in antiquity. Successive empires later conquered them, large numbers of Jews were displaced, and Jewish communities nevertheless continued living in the land.

In the late nineteenth century, modern political Zionism transformed that ancient religious, historical and national connection into an organised movement for Jewish self-determination. 1232223

Why Israel?

The 10-minute story

The Holocaust did not create the Jewish connection to Israel.

Herzl did not invent the desire to return.

1948 did not begin Jewish history in the land.

Why Zionism became organised

An older connection became a modern national movement amid emancipation, nationalism and antisemitism.

Start with the question you heard.

A free Jewish people in its ancestral homeland.

Jewish national self-determination.

Restoration of Hebrew language and culture.

A secure home for Jewish refugees.

Responsibility for Jewish collective defence.

Democratic civic institutions.

Peace and good neighbourliness.

At its core

Zionism means the Jewish people have the right to national self-determination in their ancestral homeland. Israel turned that principle into living sovereignty, refuge and national renewal.

Follow the complete case

Jewish history in the land did not begin in 1948.

Jewish peoplehood originated in the Land of Israel. Sovereignty was lost, but identity, prayer, community and return endured until modern Zionism rebuilt national life.
